The Adoption Program at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore

Because adoption is a lifelong journey.

Adoption is an exciting and rewarding experience. Approximately 120,000 children are adopted each year in the United States, and studies show the majority of adopted children make a successful transition to home life when their parents are well prepared.

The Adoption Program at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) provides parents with critical information and resources, including guidance to help them create a safe and welcoming environment for their new family members. Led by Elaine E. Schulte, MD, MPH, one of the foremost physicians specializing in adoption medicine, the Adoption Program at CHAM offers pre-adoption consultations, post-adoption medical evaluations and immunizations, and ongoing care for adopted children.

CHAM has the distinction of being the first academic hospital to have a comprehensive adoption program in the tristate area, and Dr. Schulte is one of a small number of physicians in the country to offer this full range of medical services to assist families touched by adoption.

While most adopted children flourish in supportive and loving homes, they also have unique medical, developmental and behavioral needs. The Adoption Program at CHAM works with families, on an ongoing basis, to address these issues and ensure a successful journey through childhood. Our services include:
